Creating Dimension

Have you ever wondered how to make your flat cookies look three dimensional? It’s makes them look really fancy, but it’s actually pretty easy to accomplish. Here’s what you will need:

  • Baked and cooled sugar cookies
  • One or more colors of royal icing
  • Offset spatula, butter knife, toothpick, or spoon

Start by outlining each section you want to fill in.

Once the outline has had a few minutes to dry, fill in one section of your cookie with icing. Make sure to get the icing into every nook and cranny using your spatula, knife, toothpick or spoon. If you have more than two sections, you can now fill in alternating sections of the cookie as long as the sections you are working on don’t touch at all. Once you have done all the sections you can for now, set the cookie aside to dry for about 20-30 minutes.

Now that the first section or group of sections have dried, you can fill in the remaining section or sections–as long as none of them touch each other. You may have to do this 3 or more times depending on your cookie design and how many sections you have.

Once you are done, let the entire cookie dry overnight and then add any details you want.

This technique works equally well for creating dimension between sections iced in one color or different colors. It’s an easy way to make pumpkins pop and soccer balls look round. Here are a few cookies I have done where I used this technique:
